William A. Lerner, MD, FACP

Dr. Lerner received his MD from the University of Brussels in 1977. He then completed a three year residency in Internal Medicine at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia following which he became a Diplomate (Board Certified) of the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1980. He subsequently undertook a three year fellowship in Hematology Oncology at NYU Medical Center in New York from 1980-1983. While there he was the Chief Fellow in his third year and also spent a year of lab research in platelet disorders as well as platelet and cancer metastases interactions. This research led to several presentations at the American Society of Hematology and American Academy of Cancer Research national conferences as well as several published journal articles on these subjects. He was Board Certified in Hematology in 1982 and Medical Oncology in 1983.

Dr. Lerner moved to the Jersey Shore and entered private practice in Hematology Oncology with Dr. Topilow and later Dr. Mencel and has continued as the managing partner of the current Atlantic Hematology Oncology Associates.

Dr. Lerner has been the Chief of Oncology and the Chairman of the Cancer Program at Ocean Medical Center for over 25 years as well as running the weekly tumor boards including the breast cancer tumor board, the gastrointestinal tumor board, the lung tumor board, and the general tumor board. In the last several years he also has been the Physician in charge for the monthly Schwartz Center Rounds, a locally run conference in conjunction with Massachusetts General Hospital and the Schwartz Foundation to improve patient and health care provider relationships.

Dr. Lerner was appointed Medical Director of the Meridian Hospice Program in 1994 and continues in this position presently. He became Board Certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine in 2000 and is the Medical Director of the Palliative Care Programs at both Jersey Shore University Medical Center (JSUMC) as well as Ocean Medical Center (OMC).
