Peter J. Mencel, MD, FACP

Dr. Mencel received his MD from the Medical Academy of Poznan, Poland with the Achievement Medal for Scholastic Excellence.  He completed his residency in internal medicine receiving the Chairman’s Award at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, New Brunswick, NJ.  He then completed his fellowship training in medical oncology at the prestigious Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York City.  His training at MSKCC included all general oncology with special emphasis on genito-urinary malignancies, earning him special recognition from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) for his research in metastatic seminoma.

He joined Dr. Topilow and Dr. Lerner  in Atlantic Hematology Oncology Associates in 1993.  While in private practice with his partners, he was appointed as the Medical Director of The Cancer Center of Jersey Shore University Medical Center.  During the 10 years of his directorship, Dr. Mencel brought to the community a host of original treatments in cancer care. He participated in many clinical studies investigating the effects of innovative treatments of the variety of cancers.  His publications and presentations have covered a broad array of specialties in his field from breast, lung, testicular and brain cancer to pain management and different adjuvant regimens. Dr. Mencel has been honored by both UMDNJ and JSUMC for his outstanding clinical research. 

He is a member of several medical societies including the American Medical Association, The American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Society of Breast Disease.
In the last few years Dr. Mencel served at the Director of Continuing Medical Education for Jersey Shore University Medical Center. During his tenure he organized numerous lectures on different topics featuring national and international experts on various oncological issues.

In addition to his private practice, Dr. Mencel has been recently appointed Medical Director of the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) Hospice.  As a medical oncologist, Dr. Mencel advocates personalized and individualized patient care that provides the cancer patient emotional support and the most contemporary treatment.

He is married and has two children.  Together with his wife Dana he organized and chaired the Sweetheart Ball for 10 years, a major fundraising event for the cancer services of Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
